One woman has left the world completely shocked after she needed to have not one, not two, but 23 contact lenses removed from her eye.

In a viral video shared on social media, Dr Katerina Kurteeva, an ophthalmologist based in California, removed a staggering number of contacts from her patient’s eye.

The disturbing clip shows the brave doctor lifting the woman’s eyelid and gently removing the contact lenses with a cotton swap one by one.

A warning was written in text over the clip: "Don’t sleep in your contact lenses."

Kurteeva elaborated on the bizarre situation in the caption, which read: "A rare occasion when someone 'forgot' to remove contact lenses at night and kept on putting a new one in every morning."

"In nearly 20 years of practice, I had never seen anything like it," she told Insider.

"The patient couldn't believe it either and asked if I was sure about the number I was counting."

Thankfully the patient didn't suffer any permanent damage to her eye.
