The classic 1961 movie musical West Side Story is getting a 2021 makeover, and we can’t wait to watch it!

The very first teaser trailer for the new West Side Story – directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg – was unveiled at this year’s Oscars and has everyone buzzing.

The upcoming remake stars Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars, Baby Driver) and newcomer Rachel Zegler as star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria.

If you’re not familiar with West Side Story, it was originally a 1957 Broadway production, written by Arthur Laurents and inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It tells the story of two love birds caught between rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.

The film finished production in 2019 and has finally been given an official release date after being delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

West Side Story is now set to hit theatres on December 9 in New Zealand.
