Katrina and her twin sister were born deaf to a hearing family. The condition can skip a generation, but there’s no way of knowing when or how. The fact that she and her husband Josef are both deaf also made the factor unpredictable.

Throughout Katrina's pregnancy, she was never sure whether her children would have the same fate.

Katrina noticed one thing about her unborn baby.

“It’s not moving, it’s not moving to sound. Maybe the baby’s lazy, I don’t know. But for me, as a mother, I am thinking maybe the baby is deaf. I don’t know…” she said.
