Smoke was detected in Auckland's SkyCity this morning.

SkyCity Hotel is being evacuated as smoke billows out of vents on the side of the building on Victoria St.

Hundreds of confused onlookers are watching as about 15 firefighters work to stop the smoke.

SkyCity spokeswoman Rebecca Foote said smoke had been detected in the hotel's generator room.

"We're just doing an evacuation of SkyCity hotel at the moment," she told the Herald.

"We're pretty sure it's contained, it's just as a precaution."

The smoke was in the SkyCity hotel and not the tower itself, she said. The tower was not being evacuated.

Foote said workers were testing a generator that had problems this year.

"We were testing that it had been fixed but obviously not," she said.

More to come.
