A onesie emblazoned with the slogan "this shirt is daddy-proof" has sparked a fierce online debate by fathers who deem it sexist.

An upset father took to Reddit to post a picture of the children's onesie, which is on sale at US retailer Sara Kety and has instructions for fathers dressing their child.

The thread has garnered a lot of attention from parents who claim the product is belittling fathers and making out as if they are unable to properly dress their own child without the need of instructions.

Men took to the comments section to sarcastically say that the shirt is funny "because fathers aren't real parents."

Others saw the forum as an opportunity to share their stories about the sexism and stereotyping that they encounter every day when looking after their children without the mother present.

They say that women have simply assumed they are "babysitting" rather than parenting their own child and being a "good father".

Some, however, simply thought some of the fathers were being "sensitive" and that the item was a joke.
