A British teenager who used to drink up to five energy drinks a day and now has ongoing health issues has warned others against consuming them.

Dion Parratt, 18, says her former addiction has left her with a serious heart condition and resulted in two miscarriages.

Last week she shared an image on Facebook of herself wearing a heart monitor, which she has to wear all the time so doctors can monitor her condition.

“This is what happens when you spend your childhood drinking energy drinks,” Dion wrote on Facebook.

“I’m now stuck with wires and a massive box attached to me for 24 hours. Before you drink ... cheap energy drinks think about what your doing to your body and to anyone who is a parent don’t let your kids drink them they should be banned.”

Dion says she has consumed the drinks since she started high school. She stopped eating food to try and lose weight and so she used the drinks as an energy boost.

“It’s really not nice watching your 18-year-old daughter go through this,” Dion's mother Debby commented on Dion’s Facebook post.

In 2014, the World Health Organisation released a study warning consumers about the dangers of energy drinks, particularly when combined with alcohol.

The paper said the primary risk was from the high caffeine levels in the drinks which can cause problems such as heart palpitations, hypertension, vomiting, convulsions and in extreme cases heart failure leading to death.
