A body has been found in a burnt out car in Wellington this morning.

Police say the alarm was raised at 7.30am when a torched vehicle with a person inside was found on an isolated stretch of Hill Road in Lower Hutt.

Detectives were now at the scene and treating the death as suspicious until the cause of the person's death was determined.

Police were alerted to the discovery of a body by the Fire Service who were initially called to the Hill Road location.

The vehicle was burning when firefighters responded to an emergency call just after 7am to extinguish the blaze, the spokesman said.

More to come.
