One of Jetstar's new Q3000 aircraft - ready to start flying new domestic routes across New Zealand.

The Qantas-owned low-cost airline said in June that it was going to expand into the regions and now the new destinations have been revealed.

Jetstar says it will soon start flying to Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth and Palmerston North.

Other cities being considered included Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson and Invercargill.

After lobbying from regional mayors, airports and tourism promoters, the airline this morning announced the winners.

Jetstar NZ boss Grant Kerr said it had "been nice to feel so welcomed and he has been impressed by the energy and the diversity of the communities" he had visited as part of the decision-making process.

"If I had enough aircraft I'd like to go to all eight of them."

Jetstar was able to access spare five Qantas group aircraft sitting on the ground and put them to use here.
