Fourteen fire trucks are battling a Wellington quarry blaze this morning.

Portacoms at the Dry Creek Quarry, near the Haywards Hill Rd/State Highway Two intersection are ablaze.

Fire Service spokeswoman Jan Wills said a Vodafone cellphone tower was also under threat.

"We got multiple calls at 8.25 this morning," she said. "We've got 14 appliances there at the moment dealing with it."

There have been reports of an explosion, but Ms Wills wasn't aware of that.

So far there have been no reports of injuries.

"There's still quite a bit of smoke in the area, but it's a lot better than it was."

"[On a traffic camera] I can't see any flames but the camera we have is a little but behind the hill."

Ms Wills said it was too soon to say what caused the fire and fire safety officers were on their way to the scene.

Traffic was still flowing on SH2, but one motorist on Haywards Hill Rd told Newstalk ZB traffic over there was at a standstill.
