Motorists in Auckland are being urged to stay off the Northern Motorway, following a truck break down early this morning.

The NZ Transport Agency warned motorists just before 7am today to consider using State Highway 18 or State Highway 16 to avoid "long delays.''

The warning comes after a break down was reported on the south-bound left lane, on the Southern Motorway, after the Victoria Park fly-over shortly after 6am.

Traffic was reportedly backed up to the Onewa Rd onramp well before 7am.
