A young man has held a woman’s hand for over an hour to stop her from jumping off a bridge.

Michael Owen, 22, was with his girlfriend when he noticed a woman standing on the edge of a bridge near Chippenham, in Wiltshire, threatening to jump into the busy motorway traffic below.

It’s reported that the distressed woman had jumped over the safety railings to reach the ledge.

"We were driving over the bridge when my partner pointed out a woman standing on the other side of the bridge. I immediately pulled over to try and slow down the traffic and to help her. I got to her and started talking to her. She was clearly very upset, so I just talked about anything I could think of with her."

Michael’s broad Welsh accent helped calm the woman down and despite having broken his finger playing rugby, he held her hand to stop her from falling.

Fire engines eventually turned up at the scene but as the woman was too scared to climb down, Michael waited for ‘a good hour’ while another engine was sent out. The police then closed the road and a lorry was parked under the bridge in case she fell.

Wiltshire Police later confirmed that the woman was taken to a nearby hospital but was fortunately uninjured.

Michael refused to give himself credit for the act of kindness.

"My family were overwhelmed when I told them. I just think I did what any other person would have done if they'd been in my situation."

We think you're amazing Michael!
