Here's The Real Reason Why Brides Hold A Bouquet At Their Wedding

For years and years brides have been walking down the aisle with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers in their hands, and we always just assumed it was because they looked pretty!

However, there's actually 3 other reasons and the first stems right back to the 1600s.

1. The Smell - 

Apparently, in the 15th & 16th centuries, people didn’t bathe as often as they do now. We’re talking like once a year. Brides would have their yearly bath around a month before their wedding day, and then just to be safe, would carry a bouquet of flowers to mask their odour!

2. Herbs & Spices - 

Another reason said to be behind the bouquet of flowers is that brides didn’t originally carry flowers at all. In the middle ages, Brides would carry strong smelling herbs and spices, such as garlic, to ward away evil spirits and bad luck/health. This then naturally transferred to the bouquets.

3. Luck - 

Again following the ‘evil spirits’ theme, as Brides were dressed in all sorts of luck, guests would often tear pieces of her dress off just to keep some luck for themselves. As time went on, women decided it was more convenient to throw their garters and bouquets instead.
