Is red wine your tipple of choice?

Well, we're about to completely confuse you.

It turns out we've been drinking our red wine wrong.

According to research from the Sydney Wine Academy and Taylor Wines, we need to stop storing our reds on the shelf or in the pantry.

Apparently, red wine is best served between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius - not room temperature, which is around 23 degrees Celsius. 

Furthermore, Taylor Wines have revealed having your drink either too warm or too cold will make rather unpleasant changes to your wine.

If the wine is too warm, the alcohol will "dominate, and masks its subtle flavours".

And if the wine is too cold "the flavours are suppressed, the tannins become harsher and the acids too sharp."

So before you crack open your next bottle, follow these rules:

For a Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon or other full-bodied wine, keep the temperature between 16 to 18 degrees.

For a lighter wine such as a Pinot Noir, aim for 12 to 14 degrees.
