Nike's famous self-tying sneakers from Back to The Future 2 are now a reality.

Called the 2015 Nike Mag, the sneakers feature power lacer technology, built-in lights and the original design from the 1989 film.

Nike made the announcement in a press release and a personal letter sent to actor Michael J Fox, who played lead Marty McFly in the film series.

In a video showing Fox trying on the shoes, the Back to the Future star declares: "That's cool ... that's insane ... that's really great."

The letter reads: "Almost thirty years ago we embarked on a journey to create a glimpse into 'the future'," the letter read."Although the project started as science fiction, we're now proud to turn that fiction into fact."

The announcement comes as US fans of the film celebrate Back to The Future Day - the exact day Marty McFly and Doc Brown time travelled to in the first sequel.

The 2015 Nike Mag limited edition sneakers will only be available to buy via auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
