New Zealand’s first-ever IKEA store just revealed when it's opening, and we can’t wait!

The wait is almost over, IKEA fans! The Swedish homeware giant has finally locked in an opening date for its very first New Zealand store.

Mark your calendar: Thursday, December 4, 2025.

That’s when the doors will officially open at Sylvia Park in Auckland - just in time for Christmas shopping (and a plate of famous Swedish meatballs).

What’s Inside?

The massive 34,000 m² store is set to be a home-lover’s dream. We’re talking over 7,500 products to browse, fully styled room setups for inspo, and a giant warehouse stacked with flatpacks you can haul home straight away or have delivered.

And yes - the food. The Sylvia Park store will have a 426-seat restaurant serving IKEA classics like meatballs, salmon dishes and plant-based favourites. There’ll even be some meals made just for New Zealand. On the way out? Grab a hotdog, cinnamon scroll, or a bag of frozen "eatballs" to take home.

Why It’s a Big Deal

"The interest and anticipation for IKEA in New Zealand can be felt all the way to Sweden, and we are very much humbled by it," says Tolga Öncu, Ingka Retail Manager at IKEA Retail.

Mirja Viinanen, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA Australia and New Zealand, added: "I’m proud we can finally deliver the good news to New Zealanders that exactly three months from today, on December 4, IKEA will open its doors, both physically and online."

So if you’re not in Auckland, don’t panic - IKEA will also be online from day one, with 29 Pick Up Points around the country and nationwide delivery.

Getting There

With the hype expected to be huge, there are new walkways, widened roads, and transport upgrades around Sylvia Park to help ease the crowds.

Still, IKEA is encouraging people to use public transport (and honestly, delivery might be the stress-free way to go in those first few weeks).

So, who's excited to visit IKEA?!
