Disney finally unveils first look at long-awaited live-action 'The Little Mermaid'

Disney has finally unveiled the first look trailer for their long-awaited live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

Starring singer and actress Halle Bailey in the iconic role of Ariel, the teaser gives fans their first glimpse at the 22-year-old's stunning vocals as she sings Part Of Your World.

Director Rob Marshall – known for his work on Mary Poppins Returns – said of Halle's casting: "After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role."

With the original animated movie hitting cinemas in 1989, The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure.

"The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric," Disney describes the film's story. "While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy."

Alongside Halley, this new version of The Little Mermaid also stars Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer) as the voice of Sebastian; Jacob Tremblay (Luca, Room) as the voice of Flounder; Awkwafina (Raya and the Last Dragon) as the voice of Scuttle; Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric; with Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos) as King Triton; and two-time Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me? Bridesmaids) as Ursula.

Disney's The Little Mermaid hits theatres in New Zealand on May 25, 2023.
