A dog scared away a man who attacked a 23-year-old woman who was running in a Dunedin park last night.

The woman was attacked from behind by a man at Ross Creek about 9.15pm, police said.

She was knocked to the ground, tied up and assaulted.

Police said the offender ran from the scene after a light-coloured dog, possibly a labrador, ran up to them.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was walking their dog in the area at the time.

Some tracks in Ross Creek have been cordoned off so a thorough scene examination can be completed today.

The public is asked to stay out of cordoned-off areas until the examination is completed.
