How many of you snuggle up in bed at night, immediately grab your phone and spend the next hour just browsing the internet?
Turns out this is actually really bad for us!
A survey recorded the sleep patterns of 9,846 teenagers aged 16 to 19 in Norway. The results were what researchers called a "dose-response relationship."
The main outcome of the was that using your phone before bed puts you at a higher risk for sleeplessness.Â
To put it simply, if you were to use your phone for an hour between 11pm and midnight, your brain becomes stimulated and you'll find that in future you'll still have problems getting asleep, even if you're not using your phone before bed.
Use of these devices was significantly associated with SOL [sleep onset latency, or the amount of time it takes to nod off] and sleep deficiency.
The blue light emitted by all LED screens also interferes with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin in the brain.
In particular, research in recent years has shown that blue wavelength light is especially harmful to circadian rhythm function.Â
There are now Blue Light Filter Apps available for download which soften the harsh artificial light, however it's probably best we all go back to reading books before bed!
